In a recent interview with Genius, Joey Bada$$ stated, “I already know I’m a better rapper than 2Pac is. That’s just facts. 1 on 1 battle, I’ll fling Pac.” He stated.
Now I can understand why this would make a few people upset. One, not only because the older generation of hip-hop believes the new wave doesn’t pay enough homage to the legends, but also because Tupac is held in regards as arguably the greatest hip-hop artist of all-time. He fully embodied what hip-hop was, what it means to be a rapper and always stood up for what he believed in and preached.
With that being said, I think it’s easy to misunderstand Joey Bada$$’ statement. Because as he shared, Tupac is one of the few artist who have influenced his own sound in many ways. So I don’t think he was going as far to say he’s done more and had a bigger impact than Tupac – strictly just talking on a bar for bar level.
Ask yourself – is Tupac on your list of top 5 rappers of all-time? Not mine at least. To me, Tupac is the greatest hip-hop ARTIST of all-time. There’s some rappers who will go down as great rappers and others who will go down as great hip-hop artists. The totality of his effects on the culture and how is music touched and inspired so many people is unmatched, and is the reason why his legacy will live on forever.
Setting impact and culture aside – no disrespect…But I can think of more than a few rappers who could out rap Pac. Kendrick…Nas…Jay Z…Eminem…Biggie…and yes this list includes Joey Bada$$ – but JUST lyricism!
But when it comes to being the greatest hip-hop artist of all-time, it’s not even close – Pac will stay in that throne for a very long time, if not forever.
To simplify – In basketball you can have a great crossover, but that doesn’t make you the greatest of all-time. Even Allen Iverson crossed up Michael Jordan, we all know the play. Tim Hardaway, Chris Paul, Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving all for sure all have better handles than No. 23 – but none will be the GOAT!
Get in the comments – tell us what you think. Is Joey Bada$$ a better rapper than Tupac or is he just talking out the side of his neck?
