The Hitman’s Bodyguard Synopsis
The Hitman’s Bodyguard starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson is about a washed up AAA bodyguard Michael Bryce (Reynolds,) who takes a job to protect the worlds most dangerous hitman, Darius Kincaid (Jackson.) Bryce is escorting Kincaid to court so he can testify against a powerful world leader.
What I liked
It was well done. The acting and writing was funny, and the action sequences were well timed and creative. I found myself laughing the loudest during the action sequences, this movie had a knack for making graphic violence very comical if you’re into that kind of thing. Reynolds and Jackson have hilarious chemistry, but what else would you expect? Jackson is a personified legend at this point and Reynolds is a consonant professional and a jack of all trades as an actor.
What Made Me Cringe
Both Kincaid and Bryce had romantic interests in the movie. Kincaid’s romance was awesome and was integral to his character and plot line. Bryce’s love interest was straight up terrible. You could have taken it out entirely and the movie would have been shorter and better. The scenes with Bryce and his love interest absolutely made me gag, and Ryan Reynolds is one of my favorites.
Pleasant Surprises
How funny the action was. Some of the violence was so well timed and over the top, you couldn’t help but laugh even if it made you feel a little bad, but it shouldn’t because it’s just a movie. Part of the over the top violence involves Selma Hayek’s character and a beer bottle. Hayek’s character stole every scene she was in, and her foul mouthed violent character was one of the best in the entire movie.
Overall Rating
I give the Hitman’s Bodyguard a solid 7/10.
Reynolds and Jackson carry a fast paced and violent action comedy, despite some poorly executed romance sequences with Reynolds character. Selma Hayek leads a strong supporting cast with a hilarious and expletive filled performance. Don’t expect a nuanced story or thought provoking writing, but for a silly over-the-top action comedy, this was well done. The writing was funny and the acting solid.
You won’t miss anything if you wait until this is available to stream. Or go to a reduced ticket night at local theatre. I saw this at the $6 Tuesday’s at the Cinnabarre Mountlake 8.
