Grynch – Street Lights (Album Review)

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This week Grynch put out a duper dope project for his latest album ‘Street Lights.’ This project has a lot of real dope production and Grynch’s flow and cadences are on point (like one would see from such a seasoned emcee). The Seattle vet pulls down some solid features having Slug from Atmosphere and west coast OG Rnb singer Kokane make appearances on the project.

I have listened through the project a few times and really enjoy the whole thing, and again the beats are dope! The album starts off with my personal favorite track ‘Carry On,’ where we catch looking back at his history as a Seattle emcee over an incredible beat from Elan Wright and Nima Skeemz. Quickly followed by an up-tempo horn sample driven track on ‘Shine.’ My next favorite record off Street Lights is the Jake One produced title track. A great boom bap record that features some Jake one signature drums and light rhodes dancing around the hook’s coal sample.
My only downside of the project is that sometimes Grynch’s verses contain too much “Im sick at rapping” “these guys don’t have the presence in the 206 as me” and while his word play and rhymes really back up most of these statements, it lacks subject matter. Don’t get me wrong this album contains solid material but some of the tracks I really really enjoy lacked a little imagery that I noticed on my 3rd play. Of course he does a great job with story telling on the back to back tracks ‘Unrequited’ and ‘My Folk’ Spot.’ Grynch turns up the funk on ‘My Folks’ which is very reminiscent of the fun feel of Grynch’s past hit ‘Volvo’ but the instrumentation just feels too right. The album rounds up at the end with a few more “fun” tracks but always slides in some bangers with ‘Paradise’ and the Wizdom and Fearce Vill assisted ‘My City’s Filthy.’ Street Lights is a great overall project and Grynch did a great job summing up the story of his career and providing traditional Northwest boom bap with an upgraded sound.

Stand out tracks: Carry On, Street Lights, Paradise
