Who is Goth Babe
Tennessee native Griff Washburn started writing music in his dorm room and later would move to New York City to pursue modeling and his music career. He would then decide to move to the West Coast where he lives with his dog Sadie traveling up and down the coast. Goth Babe lived a tiny home, then in a van, and he now in a sailboat. Griff documents his journeys on his youtube and his website. He is one of the most interesting characters in the music landscape due to his off the grid and carefree lifestyle
The name Goth Babe is even a reflection of this. The name is unique and off putting, but Griff says he came up with the name to remind himself to not take things so seriously.
When listening to his music it is often hard to pinpoint what genre it is, and it just further reflects the idea of doing what you want and not having boundaries in life. The easy going and outside the box sound is something that music fans from all genres can enjoy. Songs such as “Weekend Friend” and “Canary Islands” lets the listener feel the freedom Griff experiences in day to day life.
In terms of describing Goth Babe’s sound it has the groove of house music with the melodics of surf music and some MGMT influences. His refreshing sound is ethereal, cinematic, and beautiful while also being perfect for any occasion.
“Lola” by Goth Babe
His most recent EP “Lola” is simply stunning. Songs such as “Backwards” and “Bioluminescence” are some of the standout tracks on the EP. The repeating and echoing arp combined with the punchy drums on “Bioluminescence” is simply perfect.
Griff also made a short film in honor of the EP discussing why he makes music. He talks about how he loves making nothing into something, and how being confined to small spaces with minimal resources pushes him to making the most with very little. The video shows the type of person he is and creates another reason on why it is hard not to love the guy.
