Gena Wynkoop aka Gigi is a new face in Seattle that sings, writes, plays, and produces her own tunes. Today, she’s premiered her debut single “How Can I Believe You?” that has a catchy lo-fi pop sensibility. With minimal instrumentation, Gigi’s voice, and vocal textures she layers underneath drive the song forward. Gigi welcomes us into her pop, neo-soul, and R&B-inspired world with this simple and enjoyable track.
Gigi put “How Can I Believe You?” together in the most fluid way possible—after one too many wines while staying at a hotel in Brisbane, Australia. Using a looping app, she put down the line of ooh’s that drive the song. Coming back to Seattle, she brought the loop to her brother, Sig Wynkoop aka “Slinky Bing,” to flesh it out. With his production skills, they added several more vocal layers, more harmonies, one or two instruments, and a thumping bassline. The result is a track that plays easily from start to finish.
As a sibling duo, GiGi and Sig have been working on developing their sounds over the past several years. From producing in the basement to tracking vocals in a closet, the evidence of their growth comes through on “How Can I Believe You?” Yet, it still retains the kind of rawness that shows they’re still growing, learning, and evolving their sound as we speak.
It wouldn’t be surprising if their next track had significantly bigger production. With each single GiGi releases, there’s sure to be a synonymous maturing to her overall sound. Listen to GiGi’s debut track “How Can I Believe You?” below and listen to what she’s building.
