Gifted Gab has been known as one of the top rappers in Seattle for quite some time. The self-proclaimed #QueenOfSeattle has progressed from someone who can rhyme really dope, to a legitimate music artist.
When you look back and bump some of her earliest creations, her rhyming abilities were polished but she lacked a consistency with her creation of complete songs. A really good track should hold my interest in more ways than just words being rhymed in an ill way, and I believe her latest project, Gab The Most High is testament to her journey.
‘Gab The Most High’ is like a trip back to the sounds of my youth. The only thing this project is missing is a Slum Village feature, Jay Dilla beat, and Erykah Badu harmonizing on a hook. Drawing influence from some of the best RNB and hip-hop music ever made, Gabby put together a beautiful compilation of music.
From the title, to the cover, to the sound…this joint is beyond dope!
‘Gab The Most High’ – Gifted Gab
With songs like ‘Show You Right,’ ‘Now We Aint,’ and ‘Piece of My Love,’ Gab shows us her inner Drake and sings on the album almost as much as she’s rapping! Even though Gab’s vocal range is somewhat limited, she has no problem keeping the listener engaged while staying in pocket.
A perfect example is her trading verses with Mario Sweet on ‘Piece Of My Love,’ which also happens to be one of my favorite songs. Gab drops an outstanding vocal performance and harmonizes with the vocal sample showing a diverse skill set that is much needed in today’s industry.
The wait for Gab The Most High has been killer but I’m happy to report it was worthwhile. Hearing Gab’s progression as an artist is exactly why we never doubted her skills as a rapper and why she remains an icon here in the Seattle area. This album is full of feel good music that makes the head nod and NEEDS to be on your BBQ playlist asap.
