G Herbo grew up on the mic. “Friends & Foes” is the latest in his remarkable string of videos. Another song of his recently dropped “PTSD” Herbo comes on the track, bringing necessary perspective to the rap genre. While lust and murder fuels many of our imaginative and colorful modern bangers, Herbo lived through it and looks better for it.
The Midwest has a true strength in its pensive mood. “Friends & Foes” further solidifies that atmosphere with one of the most honest, laid out, and wise tracks recently released. Herbo goes through his career, his life, his habits, and arrives in good form. An obvious weight haunts his voice, but his form is flawless.
“Where would I be without this rap shit, nobody really knows,” the poet G Herbo spits to open up “Friends & Foes.” Going through streets, friends, stashes, and homes makes for more and more baggage. Those who have experienced PTSD likely know the tangible weight that stems from the disease. This track is one of the best pieces of art in embodying that atmosphere, that weight.
There’s no shame in being hurt. “Friends & Foes” is not a complaint, or a cry revealing weakness. Instead, it’s the record of a man who had to make himself through resistance and survival. There’s no conversation about rivals when you talk about Herbo, he earned his spot. After living the life he made the art. One can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of respect.
Cool down with “Friends & Foes,” and get lost on a walk. It’s okay to get in your feelings. PTSD isn’t about hiding anything, it’s about conquering demons. Herbo remains an incredibly strong man in the face of all of his challenges. Few artists can claim such a healthy progression.
