I thought being 25 and going to FreakNight 2016 meant I was irresponsible, immature, and unable to let go of my fleeting youth. Twenty-five is young, but in rave years, that’s practically ancient.
Think about it, the first FreakNight happened in 1996 and most of this year’s attendees weren’t even born yet.
My sister was born in 1998 and FreakNight 2016 was her first festival. Based on her recap and the details from the weekend, it won’t be her last.

On the first night, she ditched her friends because they were grinding too much on random dudes and by night two, she gave up and also participated. Gross. At 18, you will find that some of your friends don’t go to raves for the right reasons and they don’t always have your back when you’re puking in the bathroom or busy grinding on a super-bro, something I witnessed this year.
Now that I’m 25 and an experienced raver, I already know how to successfully plan out an awesome festival weekend. Since I already have matured into a ‘fly as hell’ young adult, I stayed behind the crowd and utilized that extra space to dance comfortably without being run over by endless asian-party-trains.
My group’s living accommodations were close to the venue but far from the other drunk idiots that it was well worth the extra money. Our AirBnB came with a fridge fully stocked with eggs and alcohol, and it was perfect for our Friday/Saturday pre-funks, afterparties, and of course, passing the fuxk out.

Even though my experience was much different from my little sisters’ we both still had a great time. This was probably the best Freaknight I have ever been to. Thanks to USC Events’ fire lineup with Zedd, 3lau, Galantis, Spag Heddy, Getter, Ghastly, RL Grime, and every other performer we saw, my sister and I are already making kandi for the next festival, Resolution.
Whether you’re 18 years old at your first rave or your 25 and it’s your 200th, you will still find that your squad changes as time passes by. This year I went to Freaknight with some old friends and some new.
Regardless of who I went with, everything came full circle when a few of us shared one of those perfect moments when the DJ played that song we had been bumping all weekend. All of us together for that moment created that perfect environment where nothing else mattered.
That was when I realized I’ll never be too old for this.
