FKA twigs, the esoteric queen, delivers yet another unforgettable visual. While most creators borrow inspiration, there are few capable of continuously creating without ever appearing contrived or inauthentic. FKA twigs, described as avant-garde, unorthodox, ground-breaking, and unordinary manages to defy the odds. With the release of “Sad Day,” she has once again pulled a trick out of her bag of esotericism.
The music video is a stunning martial art short, loosely set to the titular song. It stars the twigs-described Wushu babe, Teake, facing off against a Burberry draped FKA twigs. Directed in collaboration with Hiro Murai, a modern-day Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon vibe exists as they wield swords while flying through the air after each other.
“Sad Day” co-star, Teake.
FKA twigs is a wonder. She is a woman with many hidden talents and gifts. Her fans are not much surprised by her uptaking of the Chinese martial art of Wushu. In addition to her undertaking of Kung Fu, she’s a weapon-wielder with her sword, Lilith, and a breathtaking pole dancer. In the same vein, the little known fact is she is classically trained as a vocalist and dancer.
Recent performances and the music video for “Cellophane” showcase her newfound pole dancing skills. Incorporating pole dance recently led to criticism from sex workers, labeling her a “culture vulture”, but she was able to make amends. As a result of mostly basing her career on fusing various obscure practices and images, it is a wonder she is only now being seen as such.
Despite the controversy, FKA twigs is an innovator that introduces her fans to little known gems from across cultures and borders. A brief recount of her music video history will show she has never shied away from the esoteric.
