The Fresh Drops playlist is Respect My Region’s own design: a playlist weekly curated with strictly new Bass, Glitch-Hop, DnB, IDM, and whatever else just makes us say “Damn” when it comes on. These songs are here to gas you up and bring a little more kick to your day. We dose dubstep and Amen breaks like they’re nootropics, and we want you to do the same.
The RMR staff does have some favorite names; we are only human after all. That doesn’t mean you won’t get variety in our playlist, though. There’s no point in making a mix like this if we weren’t gonna spend every week looking for new names to show off. Here’s five DJ’s and artists who have never appeared on the Fresh Drops playlist before.
Machinedrum, Angelica Bess – Only One
Braindance/Jungle
It’s been a minute since Machinedrum’s last full-length release, so new music is very exciting. For those who don’t know this legend, Machinedrum is a percussion wizard who creates some of the most danceable non-House EDM around. One taste of this song and you’ll understand everything this guy is about. Teaming up with Angelica Bess, a silky-spoken vocalist, the two have created a crazy composition.
This song stands out from other Machinedrum tracks because it’s not a simple Jungle setup. This song is in 5/4, which basically means there’s an extra beat in each measure. Where most EDM breaks into a standard meter, four-beat loop (4/4), this song introduces IDM stereotypes by adopting an odd time signature. It’s for this reason that Only One is more Braindance than it is Jungle.
bbno$ – edamame (feat. Rich Brian)
Deep Hip-House/Downtempo
This song probably wouldn’t be on here if its track wasn’t breaking several sub-genre rules at the same time. Who even likes rules anyway though? What you’re hearing when you put edamame on is a 110 BPM Deep House-inspired beat with rappers over the top. Not just any rappers, either. Rich Brian and bbno$ really know how to write some fire lyrics.
The hope is that this song gets as much success as Lalala, because damn does it hit. Like a bank heist, the beat comes in and drops right back out before the 2:30 mark can even come around. Vancouver native bbno$ knows how to make the most formal hip-hop banger you ever heard. Meanwhile the Indonesia-born Rich Brian seals the deal with some insane phrases that get stuck in your head.
GRiZ, Jantsen – Burn Up The Floor
Glitch-Hop/Brostep
GRiZ is already a Glitch-Hop legend on the Fresh Drops playlist, but Jantsen is a welcomed new face. Burn Up The Floor is one of several songs off GRiZ’s brand-new full-length, Rainbow Brain. Jantsen puts a final dub stamp of approval on this piece in particular, and it’s great to see him teaming up with GRiZ. Currently, Jantsen’s hottest track is a Bassnectar collab by the name of It’s About to Get Hectic (feat. Born I).
We have no complaints for this track whatsoever, except for maybe the fact that it’s a little more Brostep than Glitch-Hop. It’s basically a split where the beat and samples are Glitch-themed, but the drops themselves have screechy American Dubstep aspects that bring it closer to the likes of Skrillex and Excision. That ain’t a bad thing, either though; it’s just a sign of two originally different sub-genres starting to mold together at the edges.
Black Tiger Sex Machine, Alborosie – Leaders
Brostep/Dub
We’re putting Dub as a genre on this one because this song has officially come full-circle. Granted, it’s not the only blatantly reggae-themed Brostep track, but Dubstep and Two-Step Garage came from these influences to begin with. Today, mainstream Brostep hardly shares these attributes anymore. Drops have become increasingly industrial and techno-toned.
We owe it to Alborosie for making this Black Tiger Sex Machine track stand out in this way. This is definitely a Brostep song in tone and form, however the drop itself as well as song texture are incredibly reggae-oriented. It’s a return to roots, but more as if you chopped down a tree and put a metallic replica in its place. Hats off to BTSM for continuing to paint our world into a cyberpunk landscape.
P8ople, Pegboard Nerds – Lalala (feat. BRYAN THE MENSAH)
House/Progressive
Okay, yes. Funnily enough, the aforementioned bbno$ track Lalala has a doppelganger in this playlist. These tracks are not really similar in any other way, though. We’ve wanted Pegboard Nerds on this playlist for awhile, too, so this new project of theirs, P8ople, couldn’t have come at a better time.
BRYAN THE MENSAH is also new to Fresh Drops, but he’s no stranger elsewhere. This vocalist is typically found in alternative and progressive settings, and focuses on uplifting, energetic messages in his music. Definitely give him a peep further, as he has already hit multiple Top 10 charts and likely will again.
The 1-4-5 progression seems to suit House music quite well. It’s a simple genre to begin with, but with that comes a challenge to create a unique, new sound. Pegboard Nerds for one, got started making furious, nerdy Dubstep and Glitch Hop, and it’s likely this history has allowed them to take a unique approach. And what can you say otherwise? This track kicks, outshining lesser House artists everywhere.
