Denzel Curry’s “King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2” Expands His Powerful and Complex Sound

The meteoric rise Denzel Curry has had is immensely deserved, with his most recent album continuing to expand on his sound even further (somehow). His unique vocal tone has captivated a mass audience, but he has expanded his sound exponentially to not just rely on that.

This most recent album continues his “King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 1”, being an early mixtape released way back in 2012. Being over 10 years in the making, “King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2” excels in every way, all under the creative direction of Denzel Curry.

Denzel Curry’s Exuberant Start

Denzel Rae Don Curry started his career making mixtapes and albums on SoundCloud, with “Imperial” being his first officially released album. This earned him a forever iconic part in the 2016 XXL Freshman Class with other starlets Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, 21 Savage, and Kodak Black

Denzel Curry’s next releases would be some of his best work. “TA13OO”, “ZUU”, and “UNLOCKED” with the extremely talented Kenny Beats was an insane album run that truly catapulted his career. The release of the entrancing masterpiece of “Walkin” and the following album “My Eyez See Your Future” truly cemented his career as astounding.

Denzel Curry also has truly cultivated an impressive group of collaborations as well as making music for more media. Working with other big artists like YUNGBLUD, redveil, T-Pain, and JPEGMAFIA on a “Bald!” remix. For media, the main one he is known for is his song “Dynasties & Dystopia” for the Netflix original based on the hit game League of Legends, Arcane, but has also done work for Dark Nights Death Metal.

His career is wild, diverse, hectic, and full of energy, which of course, is reflected in his music. The in-your-face Denzel Curry and the more reserved Denzel Curry truly merge to create an impressive record on “King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2”.

Denzel Curry Never Fails to Impress

What was the most impressive thing regarding the record was the flow, and not just from Denzel Curry. It is no surprise he has a complete stranglehold on his flow, constantly flopping from fast to slow, to aggressive to soft, which is why it is surprising the features present match him completely.

Armani White on the bumping “WISHLISHT” masters his flow perfectly. Before bopping to lines that end in -ack (ending with a great line regarding Emmitt Smith), he quickly accelerates into a running flow. A$AP Rocky perfectly jumps into “HOODLUMZ” with a quick delivery before dropping to his classic dragging flow over the insanely produced beat, including a winding synth with a booming bass.

The structure around these tracks regarding choruses is also masterfully done. To create an iconic and good chorus in rap, one must find a catchy pace to deliver the line, and, of course, it must be able to be shouted to the highest extent possible. The chorus on “G’Z UP” just repeats the title on an intoxicating beat with Halloween-y synths flaring in the background as the bass booms and hi-hats tap is electric.

The chorus on “SKED” is also excellent for more of the same. Repeating “I said what I said, bitch, you scared, you scared” (pronounced in the way it is in the title) over a heavily reverberated synth that is to the point of buzzing as the percussion shuffles, demonstrating the true mastery Denzel Curry has.

The obvious things are amazing, like the production and lyrics. “ULTRA SHIT” has some bubbling, heavenly synths coming in and out that create this atmosphere of slyly bopping back and forth. “SET IT” has lyrics like, “Feel like JFK / I’m tryna keep my head on straight,” and “Denzel, no Curry, shoot the 30 like Curry”.

Denzel Curry seems to never miss, like a professional playing darts. There is not a dud on the record, as “King Of The Mischievous Vol. 2” is looking to be on the higher range of rap releases this year.
