Last year, at the Summer Meltdown music festival, Dave B told us about a project he just finished. He talked about the chemistry he had with the producers (Sango, Wax Roof, Vitamin D, UMoore, Daoud Anthony) and how it spawned his “best fucking songs.” Bleu is now out and I can’t help but agree, even if this isn’t the exact project he was talking about.
Dave’s newest project is filled with rich storytelling over slow melodic beats. It’s definitely his typical m.o. but it’s obvious he’s honed his unique style of singing/rapping to a fine edge. The entire album blurs the lines between singing and rapping while exploring life as an independent musician.
Bleu is filled with catchy tales of relationships, pretty love songs, and incredibly honest doses of self-reflection. Dave has an uncanny ability to paint an everyday mundane scene into a beautiful picture. Getting dressed for the day and plane rides become bars that are stuck in your head for days.
With only two features on the entire project (Romaro Franceswa and Shelby Poole), Dave proves he can hold listeners through all 10 tracks with ease. Opening with “Peace” and closing with “Break” and “Pray” are my highlights. I dare you not to put Bleu on repeat and show all of your friends.
