Cupid—widely known as The Line Dance King and for creating the hit songs “Cupid Shuffle” and “Flex” —joined Respect My Region today for an official RMR Podcast episode talking about his new album, legacy of Cupid Shuffle and his brand-new single, High Stepping featuring Mr. Talkbox, which comes complete with an instructional dance video already making waves on TikTok.
With this record, the Line Dance King aims to do what he’s always done best: get people on their feet, smiling, and moving together.
“I want High Stepping to impact the world and inspire lives one dance step at a time,” Cupid says.
High Stepping arrives as the latest entry in Cupid’s expansive catalog, fusing R&B grooves with undeniable dance-floor energy. Teaming up with Grammy-winning producer and talkbox master Mr. Talkbox (known for his work with Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar), the track pushes Cupid’s signature sound into fresh territory.
The accompanying instructional video shows just how easy—and fun—it is to learn, ensuring the song can spread far beyond traditional line dance circles.
This summer, Cupid has been busy: first dropping The Cookout with Houston icons Bun B and Paul Wall, then flipping his viral anthem Flex into a brand-new R&B version in July.
Each release proves Cupid isn’t content to rest on his six-time-platinum laurels. He’s still innovating, still finding ways to turn everyday moments into unforgettable dance experiences.
New Album “The Line Dance King” Coming September 1st
As if the singles weren’t enough, Cupid is gearing up for his next full-length album, dropping September 1st on all major streaming platforms and everywhere people get music. Every song on the project was specially crafted to do one thing: make people dance.
On the Respect My Region Podcast, Cupid summed up the album’s mission in just three words:
“You. Will. Dance,”
Cupid told me when asked about 3 words to describe the project.
This album isn’t just about keeping the party alive—it’s about pushing line dance culture into the future, while honoring the traditions that made him a household name.
The Lasting Power of the Cupid Shuffle
To talk about Cupid is to talk about The Cupid Shuffle—a record that single-handedly redefined line dance music. Since its release, the song has become a pop-culture staple, appearing in movies, TV shows like Saturday Night Live, and soundtracking weddings, school dances, family reunions, and stadium halftime shows around the globe.
That song didn’t just spark a viral movement; it built an entire lane of music.
Cupid turned line dance into more than just a southern tradition—he globalized it.
“I’ve seen over and over again how my music can bring people together at the drop of a dime: white, Black, young, old, Democrats, Republicans,” Cupid explains. “Music is my way of leading with positivity so we can push all that aside and just get together on the dance floor.”
Flexibility, Freedom, and Unity
Cupid’s 2020 viral hit Flex introduced a new type of line dance—one that lets people freestyle and add their own individuality. It became a supremely catchy tailgate anthem, amplified by Twitch/YouTube superstar Kai Cenat. Now, High Stepping and the upcoming album carry that same DNA of freedom and expression.
“My music has hit almost every kind of genre, and I love that challenge of creating something that’s going to connect with everybody,” he says. That universal approach is why you’ll find country fans, pop fans, hip-hop heads, and older generations all vibing with the same tracks.
