The Atlanta based producer has worked with other Atlanta Artist such as Young Nudy and Kenny Mason, but his versatility and ear for sampling is something every Hip-Hop fan will enjoy
Edward Maclin Cooper III aka COUPE grew up in Macon Georgia. He would move down to Atlanta in 2011 to pursue music. One day when he was working a regular 9-5 when he met Young Nudy’s road manager and was asked to send Nudy some beats. He was later invited to the studio, this first time cooking up together would lead to the two artists spending 5 months together creating music.
Atlanta Births Another Remarkable Creative in COUPE
The Peaches and Eggplant producer has a fantastic ear for what works. From songs such as RICH by Kenny Mason where he uses his ear for sampling and combines it with punchy drums and car shaking 808s, or his fun and quirky melodies on songs like Blue Cheese Salad.
COUPE is exceptional with his sample choice and rhythm. In most of his beats, the producer uses the sample as a part of the drums by creating great pockets for the artist as well as tension. A great example of the producer’s versatility is shown on Kenny Mason’s song MONEY SIGNS where he combines Rage Beat synths with guitar. Not to mention he has one of the best producer tags in the game.
The producer’s sound and traction eventually caught the attention of Atlanta legends LUCKI and 21 Savage. LUCKI and COUPE would go on to work on one of the singles for LUCKI’s latest album Heavy On My Heart. The song has over 1.3 million views on youtube and is one of LUCKI’s best. COUPE also made two songs for 21 Savage’s album Redrum. But this type of success was not immediate for Atlanta’s upcoming producer
COUPE’s Early Struggles
After the producer quit his job and decided to pursue music full time, he found a lot of criticism. When working with Young Nudy for the 5 month stretch, Nudy didn’t like a lot of the beats that COUPE was making. In the producer’s own words “I heard a lot of nos before I heard a yes”.
This struggle made him the producer he is today. This experience helped the Macon born producer realize that not everything goes to plan and that’s what makes art special. A clip on his instagram, he talks about how mistakes are necessary in music and he constantly reminds himself to not overthink things. This piece of advice has helped him advance in his career and get to where he is now.
COUPE’s First Producer Project
Many producers now a day want to make their own lane and show off their skills. We have seen this with Metro Boomin’s Super Hero series with his albums “Not All Heroes Wear Capes” and his most recent “Heroes & Villains”. Another industry megastar, KennyBeats, released his album “LOUIE”. COUPE on an interview with the One More Time Podcast said that many artists he has worked with in the past will be on the project such as Kenny Mason, Young Nudy, BabyDrill, and he might even have James Blake on the project. The Atlanta producer has not released a name for the project, but he hinted at one song called Never Snitch with Young Nudy.
