Chance The Rapper is steady climbing his way up the hip-hop mountain. If you didn’t already know, Chance is an independent artist and has prided himself on being one. He just won a few Grammy’s, has been making national television appearances on shows like SNL, recently donated $1 Million dollars to CPS (Chicago Public Schools) and is gearing up to release his next album.
Are Streaming Services Unfair?
The Chicago native who has always been known to drop his music for free, says he might sell his next project as opposed to just streaming. This is because he feels the rate of 1500 streams being the equivalent of one album sale is unfair.
In a recent interview, Chance The Rapper said “I might actually sell this album…I kind of hate the fact that I can’t chart, really. I can chart, but the way they have the streaming shit set up is weak as fuck,” Chance said. “Nobody listens to their songs 1500 times when they buy it – fuck outta here! So it makes it hard. I can’t rally compete with other people. Not that the charts matter at all, but C’mon.”
Other major artists like Taylor Swift have also shared their frustration with streaming services like Apple Music for the rate at which their streams pay out. Not only artists but labels too are unhappy with the effects of streaming. This is because it’s had an impact on the percentages they collect from their artists. (Sad story for “The Man”)
What are your thoughts on streaming? Is it fair? Is it unfair? Would you rather pay $10 for one album or would you rather pay $10 a month to listen to as much music as you want?
