Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly

Kendrick Lamar Releases ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’

**Update, To Pimp A Butterfly is back on iTunes!!

Kendrick Lamar released To Pimp A Butterfly yesterday, earlier than expected! There has been some beef between Top Dawg and Interscope about the early release but I am unsure if this is a media scheme or not. In a day where almost every album is being released as a ‘surprise’ (check Beyonce…Drake…and supposedly Kanye’s next album) it would not surprise me that they did this on purpose. The hype started when Kendricks album was uploaded to iTunes with an all black cover and unnamed tracks a few weeks ago with a March 23rd release date. Then a few weeks later Rolling Stones dropped an article with a little more information and the correct title/cover. So the ‘surprise’ element has been slowly building throughout this process, but is the week early release (and a day after Tupac’s Me Against The World 20th anniversary) planned or not?

Dave B - loosies

Loosies – Dave B’s New Tracks

What do you do when your a Northwest hip-hop artist and you want a slightly more commercial sound but want to remain hip-hop? You call up Jake One and Stewart Villain…and that is exactly what Dave B did for Loosies. Damian Lillard Freestyle – KILLS Sway in the Morning

Portland Trailblazers point guard lets go of some steam in NYC on Sway in The Morning this past All Start Snub Weekend. Over a classic Jay-Z instrumental Damian goes in about the rise to the NBA and the destructive environment, Oakland California, in which he was raised. The Bay area has put out quite a bit of dope rappers and hoopers, is Damian Lillard the bridge for the gap? A dope Damian Lillard freestyle is nothing new as he has been no stranger to professing his love for hip-hop and the freestyle art with his regular trending ‘4-Bar Fridays.’ Check out Damian Lillard’s 4 Bar Friday website or on his Instagram/Twitter

Lil Ripp – GDSC (Mixtape)

Tacoma’s own Lil Ripp releases his newest project GDSC (Grind Daily Shine Crazy). Lil Ripp drops another solid mix tape and teams up with All Money In’s Dj VIP. Although he has some real dope tracks there is a little inconsistency within the quality of recordings on a few tracks. If Ripp keeps his grind the same and continually ups the quality and cohesiveness he is going to be trouble and make himself one of the most slept on artist in the NW.

Mikey Vegaz – January 12th (#OV3 Leak)

Mikey Vegaz (#OV3) goes in over an instrumental off J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive on ‘January 12th.’ It should be widely noted that Mikey is one of my favorite rappers from the Northwest and should never be slept on, but this jam is dope. Mikey combines bars, stunting, and dropping some life jewels all in one. This is a leak off the upcoming Oregoon Vol. 3 (which we will have when it drops!).

Kendrick Lamar – Blacker The Berry

Kendrick Lamar comes through with a new BANGER with ‘Blacker The Berry’ and leaves it full of nothing but substance. This track should infiltrate your entire skull. Not only should your head be nodding but you should also open your mind to the negative social constructs still in effect. As always Kendrick brings his thoughts full purpose with offering multiple views of the same themes, while rapping his ass off.

Hazy Sundaze Episode 1 – Illmaculate

New weekly YouTube series from Portland’s Illmaculate titled ‘Hazy Sundaze.’ Illmac has made a name for himself as a force to be reckoned with in the battle arena, but dude makes some dope music outside of lyrically ripping heads off in the ring. The track toward the end of the video for example, the one saying ‘roll you up so I can smoke you down’ or whatever…psssh, sounds FIRE!
