Las Vegas Raiders Need to Stop the Slide Against Buffalo Bills | NFL Week 6 Preview

The Las Vegas Raiders need a response, and Josh Allen and the Bills are coming to town. After opening the season 3–0, Las Vegas enters Sunday’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills trying to avoid a third consecutive loss which would put them at 3-3.

Buffalo arrives at 4–1 after an overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams, giving Klint Kubiak’s team another opportunity to measure itself against an AFC contender.

The challenge is substantial, but there are openings. Buffalo can score quickly, extend possessions through Allen’s legs and punish missed assignments. Its defense also gives the Raiders a chance to put together the kind of offensive afternoon necessary to compete.

For Raider Nation, the question is whether Las Vegas can turn those opportunities into touchdowns while giving its defense enough help to finish the game.

Raiders vs. Bills Game Time, TV Channel and Location

The Buffalo Bills visit the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, October 18, at Allegiant Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. Pacific, or 4:25 p.m. Eastern.

The Raiders’ official game center lists CBS and Paramount+ coverage, with availability subject to local broadcast and streaming restrictions. Local radio coverage includes KOMP 92.3 FM and Raider Nation Radio 920 AM.

Las Vegas begins a stretch of two consecutive home games. Taking advantage of that opportunity starts with playing well enough early to make Allegiant Stadium an asset.

Las Vegas Needs to Stop the Slide

The Raiders’ 45–17 loss at New England followed a much closer defeat against Kansas City. Those results produced the same consequence in the standings, but they exposed different levels of concern.

As detailed in RMR’s Raiders vs. Chiefs recap, Las Vegas had a fourth-quarter lead against Kansas City before explosive plays and a costly kickoff-return fumble changed the finish. The Raiders demonstrated that they could compete, then failed to close.

Sunday requires a more complete performance.

Las Vegas cannot repeatedly lose field position, give away possessions or ask its offense to erase defensive breakdowns. Against Allen, one poor series can quickly become a two-possession deficit.

The Raiders need a game that remains manageable into the fourth quarter, with their full playbook still available.

Kirk Cousins and Brock Bowers Can Attack Buffalo’s Secondary

Buffalo’s defensive numbers provide a reason for optimism. The Raiders’ official matchup preview lists the Bills allowing 280.4 passing yards per game, ranking 31st entering Week 6.

That creates an opportunity for Kirk Cousins, provided his protection holds up.

Our matchup read: Kubiak should use Brock Bowers’ movement to help identify coverage, then give Cousins quick answers when Buffalo brings pressure. Bowers can threaten the middle, draw additional attention and create room for other targets.

The offense becomes easier to defend when every important throw looks destined for the same player. Michael Mayer and the receivers need opportunities when Buffalo shifts coverage toward Bowers.

Protection remains the condition that makes everything else possible. Long-developing routes offer little value if Cousins cannot finish his drop or step into the throw.

Ashton Jeanty’s Role Should Extend Beyond Carries

The Raiders enter Sunday averaging 82 rushing yards per game, according to the team’s statistical comparison. That leaves too much of the weekly workload on the passing offense.

Ashton Jeanty needs productive touches, but forcing runs into crowded fronts would only create more difficult passing situations.

Our offensive emphasis would be to involve Jeanty through handoffs, screens and underneath routes. Make Buffalo defend him in space while giving Cousins an outlet when deeper options are covered.

A short completion that creates second-and-four can serve the same immediate purpose as a successful early-down run: keeping the offense ahead of the sticks.

Las Vegas also needs to recognize when a drive demands aggression. Holding possession helps against Allen, but a long series ending in a field goal can still leave Buffalo with the advantage.

Josh Allen Makes Every Defensive Assignment Harder

Buffalo enters Week 6 averaging 32.8 points, tied for the NFL’s highest scoring average. Allen also has 239 rushing yards, giving the Bills another way to create offense when the initial passing concept breaks down.

That second phase of the play is where Las Vegas must stay disciplined.

A covered receiver does not mean the snap is finished. A collapsing pocket does not guarantee a sack. Allen can escape pressure, force defenders toward the line and throw into the space they leave behind.

Our defensive priority would be coordinated pressure. Edge rushers need to close without creating an easy escape, while interior defenders prevent Allen from stepping into open lanes.

The coverage must hold through that entire sequence. Leaving an assignment early to chase the quarterback can turn a promising defensive play into Buffalo’s biggest gain of the drive.

James Cook Cannot Become the Overlooked Threat

Allen deserves attention, but James Cook makes it dangerous to build the entire defensive plan around the quarterback.

In Silver and Black Pride’s opponent breakdown, Cook enters Sunday averaging 106.4 rushing yards per game.

For Las Vegas, that puts tackling and run fits near the top of the assignment list.

If Cook consistently creates favorable second downs, Buffalo can keep its entire offense available. The Raiders would then have to defend the handoff, play-action and Allen’s scrambling ability without the advantage of an obvious passing situation.

Our read: the first defender must slow Cook enough for help to arrive. Missed tackles that turn modest gains into explosive runs would make an already difficult matchup considerably worse.

Maxx Crosby and the Turnover Opportunity

Maxx Crosby enters the matchup with 36 quarterback pressures, while Buffalo has committed nine giveaways across its last three games, according to the Raiders’ official preview.

There is an opportunity to disrupt this offense.

The challenge is creating those mistakes without depending on them. Las Vegas needs possessions that end with ordinary defensive stops, too.

Silver and Black Pride’s Week 6 analysis notes that the Raiders generated nine takeaways during their three opening wins, followed by one across their two losses.

Crosby can help change that pattern, but complementary pressure matters. Buffalo should have to account for threats beyond one edge rusher.

Raiders vs. Bills Injury Updates

The Raiders’ final injury report ruled out defensive tackle Tonka Hemingway, tight end Carter Runyon and wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr. Guard Trey Zuhn III was questionable.

Bowers and Jeanty finished Friday as full participants without game designations. Jalen Nailor also finished as a full participant without a designation.

Buffalo listed DJ Moore, Joshua Palmer, Ed Oliver, Dee Alford and T.J. Sanders as questionable. The Bills’ official injury update also reported that right tackle Spencer Brown was expected to play. Final inactive announcements determine availability.

Raiders vs. Bills Odds and Sportsbook Context

Sunday morning’s Silver and Black Pride viewing guide reported FanDuel listing Buffalo as a 6.5-point favorite with a 52.5-point total. Treat those figures as a reported snapshot rather than a guaranteed current price.

That market position frames Las Vegas as a meaningful home underdog while anticipating substantial scoring.

For readers comparing FanDuel, DraftKings or BetMGM, the exact spread matters. A six-point loss and a seven-point loss produce different outcomes against a 6.5-point number. Prices and availability vary by operator and jurisdiction.

The football question behind the total is whether Las Vegas can consistently finish drives while limiting Buffalo’s explosive plays.

RMR Prediction: Bills 27, Raiders 31

Our pick is Buffalo in a competitive game.

Las Vegas has a credible offensive path through Bowers, Jeanty’s receiving involvement and a passing attack facing a vulnerable secondary. The Raiders should have opportunities to move the ball and keep the outcome uncertain.

Allen’s ability to rescue possessions gives Buffalo the finishing advantage. Unless Las Vegas improves its tackling and produces timely stops, the Bills have more ways to create the decisive touchdown.
