Costa Rica has a way of pulling you into its rhythm without forcing anything. You land at San Juan International Airport in San Jose, take a ride to your hotel or AirBnB, and before long your daily habits start to shift. All the sudden you’re drinking beers in Costa Rica, smoothies at the local soda, eating different snacks, grabbing whatever’s available at the corner store or local market, and somewhere along the way those small decisions turn into favorites you actually look forward to every day.
For me, a lot of that experience comes down to a handful of drinks, beers, fresh juices, and snacks that just hit every time. Nothing overly complicated, nothing trying too hard. Just consistent, flavorful, and tied directly to the day to day lifestyle out here.
My Favorite Snacks, Drinks, Desserts, and Beers in Costa Rica 2026
Tropical Drinks in Costa Rica That Always Deliver
If you’ve spent any real time in Costa Rica, you’ve seen Tropical drinks everywhere. They’re in coolers, grocery aisles, beach shops, and local sodas. These drinks are part of the daily routine, not just something you try once.
The manzana verde flavor stands out immediately. Crisp, slightly tart, and refreshing without feeling heavy. It’s one of those drinks you grab without thinking because it always hits.
Mandarin brings a brighter citrus profile. Clean, refreshing, and perfect after time in the sun. It’s one of the best drinks to cool down with during the middle of the day.
Melocotón negra adds a smoother, deeper flavor. It leans into that peach profile with a richer feel, something you slow down and enjoy instead of rushing through.
These three flavors alone give you a full rotation of go-to drinks in Costa Rica.
Fresh Juices and Smoothies in Costa Rica, A Daily Must
One thing that doesn’t get talked about enough is how consistent the fresh juices are across Costa Rica. Almost every restaurant, soda, or local spot has them, and once you start ordering them, it becomes part of your routine fast.
They’ll usually ask if you want it “en agua” or “en leche”, meaning water-based or milk-based. Most of the time, I keep it simple and go water-based, especially in the heat.
Two that I get every time:
Limonada con hierbabuena
This is fresh lemonade blended with mint, and it’s easily one of the most refreshing drinks you can get anywhere. It comes out ice cold, slightly tart, with that clean mint finish that hits perfectly after being outside.
Jugo de maracuyá
Passionfruit juice, bold, slightly tangy, and full of flavor. It’s not watered down, and it always feels fresh. This one stands out because it actually tastes like real fruit every time.
Most days, I’m ordering both so that I only have to order once. It’s part of the meal, part of the routine, and honestly one of the best parts of eating out in Costa Rica.
Imperial Beer, A Staple of Costa Rica’s Drinking Culture
Imperial beer is everywhere in Costa Rica. Restaurants, bars, beach spots, corner stores, it doesn’t matter. It’s part of the culture and part of the experience. Drinking beers in Costa Rica is notably better than drinking in the United States. Why? Pura Vida.
The classic Imperial is light, clean, and easy to drink. It fits any setting, from casual meals to long afternoons outside.
Imperial Silver takes things even lighter. It’s built for hot weather and goes down quick, making it a go-to option after time in the sun.
Imperial Ultra gives you a lighter option without losing the familiar taste and consistency.
Across the board, Imperial delivers reliability. You know exactly what you’re getting every time, and that’s why it stays in heavy rotation. I always choose Imperial beers in Costa Rica.
Pro Platanitos Limón y Sal, The Go-To Plantain Chips
Pro Platanitos limón y sal are one of the best snacks in Costa Rica. Thin plantain chips with a strong crunch and a perfect balance of salt and lime.
The lime adds just enough acidity to keep the flavor sharp without overpowering it. The texture holds up, the flavor hits immediately, and once you open a bag it’s hard to stop.
These are ideal for the beach, road trips, or just something to snack on throughout the day. Crunchy, salty, sweet, tangy, these are my absolute favorite daily snack in Costa Rica.
Tronaditas Limón y Sal, Light Corn Chips with Addictive Flavor
Tronaditas limón y sal are a completely different experience. These are corn chips, lighter and crispy, with an airy texture that makes them easy to eat quickly.
The lime and salt combo still leads, but the texture changes everything. They feel lighter, almost melt as you eat them, and disappear fast once the bag is open. I find myself eating half a big bag, or the entire small one every single time I buy them.
The contrast between Tronaditas and Platanitos is what makes both stand out. One brings crunch and substance, the other brings that light, addictive chips-style feel.
Bolitas de Coco, A Classic Costa Rican Sweet Treat
Bolitas de coco are one of the most authentic and low key snacks you’ll find in Costa Rica. They’re available in corner stores, liquor stores, and small markets all over the country. I was able to find them at numerous stores in Jaco, San Jose, Limon, Puerto Viejo, Tamarindo, and many other small towns as well. You’ll find them in 6-7 packs of smaller bolitas de coco or sold as one larger, smaller apple-sized unit.
Made from coconut, sugar, and evaporated milk, these small treats pack a lot of flavor. Sweet, slightly chewy, and rich without being overwhelming. This is by far my favorite sweet treat.
They feel homemade even when packaged, which adds to their appeal. No heavy branding, no marketing push, just a consistent snack that always delivers.
If you’re looking for a traditional Costa Rican dessert or sweet snack, bolitas de coco are a must.
Dos Pinos Paletas, The Perfect Cold Treat in Costa Rica
Dos Pinos paletas are a key part of the Costa Rica experience. You’ll find them in gas stations, grocery stores, and beachside shops across the country.
They’re simple, creamy, and refreshing, exactly what you want in a hot climate. The flavors are clean, and the texture always hits. My favorite flavors are the orange, lime, and strawberry, with lime being my absolute go-to choice every time I go on a long walk and need to cool down.
Grabbing a paleta during the day or after dinner on a walk becomes second nature. It’s one of those small habits that quickly turns into part of your routine.
These Costa Rica Drinks, Juices, and Snacks Just Make Life Better
What makes all of these drinks, fresh juices, beers, and snacks stand out is how naturally they fit into everyday life in Costa Rica. Nothing feels forced. Nothing feels overhyped. These are products that people actually consume daily, and that consistency matters.
You wake up, make breakfast and go on an adventure. You grab a Tropical to get refreshed.
For lunch, you sit down somewhere and order a limonada con hierbabuena and a jugo de maracuyá. Pair that with a choripan or a chifrijo and you’re in for an incredible meal.
While you’re still out, you pick up Platanitos or Tronaditas for the 2nd half of your adventure.
With dinner, you grab an Imperial.
For dessert while you’re out on a walk, maybe a bolita de coco or a Dos Pinos paleta.
It all flows together without overthinking it.
That’s what defines the experience. Not chasing something premium or imported, but tapping into what’s already around you and enjoying it.
Once you settle into that rhythm, these become more than just snacks and drinks. They become part of how you experience Costa Rica.
Pura Vida.
