There are more than a million different ways someone could describe Northern Nights Music Festival. For me, breathtaking and life-changing are both accurate, but still not enough. After attending this year’s festival, it is clear that NNMF is only going to grow into something better each and every year
Bringing together a blend of people from all over the world, Northern Nights 2019 also infused music and cannabis in ways never done before. Berner and B-Real rocked the stage together and individually, plus the festival hosted a record-breaking crowd and gave 21+ attendees the ability to purchase cannabis from a pop-up dispensary that was tucked away in the woods.
Not only could 21+ attendees purchase legal cannabis, but they could also consume the product in a vibey Tree Lounge that was staged with couches, pop-up tents, and roughly 20 cannabis companies. Over the course of the three days I attended, I couldn’t help but notice that every single cannabis vendor went above and beyond to educate each guest. It was almost as if everyone already knew each other which made for great vibes and conversations.
Since cannabis was able to be sold via The Green Door pop-up dispensary, Cookies, CRU Cannabis, Flow Kana, Humboldt Farms, and Buddy Buddy offered flower that ranged between $25-$60 an eighth. Some of the brands also carried pre-rolled joints for those who didn’t want to use glass or roll-up themselves. Two highly respected cannabis brands, Chemistry and Jetty, both came in clutch with various concentrates and vaping options.
Hosted up at the intersection of Humboldt and Mendocino County, this festival has been around for almost a decade. Considered by many to be a smaller and more independent festival, it was clear that the addition of legal recreational cannabis helped add a new level of hype that attracted more people than ever before.
I met guests who traveled from all over the world to experience this one-of-a-kind music event. This year I connected with people from the Bay Area, NorCal, the Emerald Triangle, Canada, Russia, Seattle, and Texas.
As usual with festivals, the weekend was beautiful thanks to the people and music. Great vibes and powerful performances helped provide one of the best festival experiences of my life.
Going into Northern Nights, I was most excited to see Berner, B-Real, Zhu, Big Wild, as well as the “local” artists selected to perform. Although I wasn’t able to see Big Wild, every single artist I did see was pretty incredible. Out of all the performances, I personally enjoyed B-Real, Berner, Noodles and City Hippies the most. Noodles had the main stage crowd dancing the entire time and City Hippies’ energy on stage really brought out a great reaction over at The Grove stage.
Berner and B-Real definitely had the crowd’s energy all the way up though. Big Bern came on stage rocking the throwback Barry Sanders jersey and kicked off his set with some classic hits from his catalog. After a few songs, he grabbed a backpack full of Cookies eighths and threw the entire bag into the crowd.
B-Real performed alongside the Cookies kingpin and also did 4-5 songs on his own. It was mad impressive to see him rap every single bar and also smoke joints at the same time. Even though he was surrounded by the younger generation of stoner music lovers, B-Real did exactly what he does best, smoke weed and deliver a fire performance where he rapped about real shit.
