In the live music sphere of Pittsburgh, PA, Grey Area Productions has teamed up with 91.3 WYEP to highlight live performances. The COVID-19 health crisis bludgeoned the music industry nation-wide. In an effort to raise money for local venues, #TheTimeOutChairSessions features pre-recorded live performances from the Rex Theater. Thus far, three episodes have been released since July 20th. #TheTimeOutChair sessions benefit Rex Theater employees during this hard time.
The Rex is one small, independently owned venue apart of a much larger fight. The Rex Theater is one of over 2,000 venues nation-wide that have banded together as a part of #SaveOurStages. Venues such as The Troubadour in Los Angeles and D.C.’s 9:30 Club are also members.
The period of shut-down is indefinite. As small businesses gear-up for the long run, surely many will not come out of this struggle unscathed. Looking forward, by continuing to fight for further federal assistance, we help lighten the impact on the music economy.
The Rex Theater in Pittsburgh has been a beacon for the live music scene of the city. The historic theater has operated more than 90 years as a landmark of the Southside area. For much of its life, The Rex existed as a popular local movie theater. With a long career in film and movie nights, it’s the only theater that’s reopened for concerts within the last decade.
Due to the pandemic and forced closure of so many small businesses, organizations like NIVA are putting the pressure on Congress. NIVA (the National Independent Venue Association) and #SaveOurStages target Washington legislation in a need for further federal assistance to keep venues alive and in-business.
