The Seattle Sounders have been a key figure in Seattle for the last 10 years. Bringing with them a consistent run of playoff-caliber teams since their inaugural MLS season in 2009. They’ve reached the playoffs in each of their first 10 seasons while winning the MLS Cup in 2016 and returning only to lose to Toronto in 2017. Macklemore, Russell Wilson, and Ciara join Drew Carey, Adrian Hanauer, and Paul Allen’s sister Jody Allen along with 9 other families that have deep ties to the Seattle area as part of the new Seattle Sounders ownership group.
The Sounders social media group excels at sending cryptic tweets whether they’re following their lead scouting director across the globe or dropping hints at a new uniform, this announcement was no different. A leopard print coat, a football, a microphone, and two jerseys hung in the Sounders lockers. Subtly hinting at the possibility of two major local celebrities becoming part of the new ownership group.
A Tweet Hinting At The New Seattle Sounders Ownership
This new ownership group is a result of Joe Roth departing from the previous group of owners. Without this group of local celebrities and business executives from Seattle, the Sounders may have been sold to an outside investment group. Former Microsoft executive Terry Myerson stated in an article on LinkedIn that the process began last year.
Russell Wilson has always talked about how he has wanted to own a professional sports team. This is his opportunity to continue to contribute to the winning culture of the Sounders. Reception for the new group seems to be mostly positive, with multiple jokes about $0.99 tickets eventually showing up.
