I fucking hate birds, but I love Pigeon Hole. They are one of the weirdest, most entertaining, gangster ass duos I’ve come across recently. Hailing from Victoria, Canada, Lee Napthine and Colin McCue maintain this supremely delicate balance between being strange and brilliant.
In their early years, the duo was part of a hip-hop collective called Sweatshop Union. You can still hear this base foundation in their music with references to rap classics spread throughout their songs. I first heard Pigeon Hole while watching the Canadian sitcom, Letterkenny. Their rap-centric track, “Wolf Pack,” was featured in the pilot episode. The raw grit and ‘I don’t give a fuck’ attitude resonated with me tough.
I’m a hip-hop head, so right off the bat I was intrigued and excited by these guys. To me, some of the sounds these guys create make me feel like I’m in the movie Grandma’s Boy and JP just told me I would like it more if I had robot ears. Normally, my entire body cringes when I hear spaceship sounding, laser beam-esque, robot noises. I’ve always felt put-off by those certain sounds found in EDM. In this instance, however, I think it emphasizes their charming oddity. They manage to balance it out with complex layers of samples and an overall mix that smooths out even the most jarring noises.
Pigeon Hole is the perfect example of genre blending at it’s finest and I can’t fucking wait to catch them at Evolve in Spokane! I’ve been listening to their “Bird Mix Vol. 1,” the entire time I was writing this article and I got to say, I’m jacked up like lil’ Texas Ranger from Talladega Nights right now.
