It seems that it has become more popular nowadays to “hate” on the holidays versus participating. We get it, you don’t want to buy into consumerism. Your love is too “cool” for that. We don’t judge but what is the harm in celebrating? You can still celebrate Valentine’s Day with your love without giving in to Hallmark, plus why you wouldn’t want to indulge in a chocolate is your own problem. Don’t take it out on your partner!
We choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day because we live busy lives. It is so incredibly easy to get tunnel vision and focus too much on work, our son or our individual goals. Tough days at work can turn into weeks of spending too much time on the couch. If we’re not careful we can go longer than we should without focusing on our relationship.
Besides our anniversary, Valentine’s Day is a guaranteed date night. As we get older it’s reassuring to know we have these two days set aside already. Perhaps the best part is that date nights can mean anything. Sometimes it means getting a Redbox and cooking something fancy after our son goes to bed (he goes to sleep at 5 p.m.). Other times it means going out to dinner and a movie. None of it means buying anything Valentines related unless we want it to.
What you choose to do on the holidays is up to you. Either way, we want to hear about it! Happy Valentine’s Day!
