I recently started looking for a new job and it’s harder than I was expecting. I work from home part-time so finding a new job means potentially giving that freedom up. Since I work in social media, there is a chance I can go fully remote. This has caused all sorts of moral dilemmas for me. I enjoy watching my son grow but child care is expensive! What has been the most interesting part of this process is how people react to the idea of a working parent.
Everyone hears mom and it’s like she isn’t capable of doing good work because she has a life outside of it. I’ve been encouraged to not mention my son, not to talk about how daycare costs will impact how much money I need, and also to not take a job because they don’t “support” working parents even though they just promoted a dad.
I don’t know which part about that infuriates me more. The fact that they think a dad can meet their demands or the fact that they think a dad can’t be solely focused on the child. The father of my child is a fully functioning adult that helped create our son and he is fully capable of adjusting his work and career to allow me to focus on mine. How come a company who doesn’t even know me gets to make that decision for my family?
This world needs more working mothers and we need other women to have babies.
