Best Food Carts To Visit in 2018: Smaaken Has FIRE Waffle Sandwiches

2018 has finally arrived in the Pacific Northwest. With legal cannabis kicking off in California, the entire west coast is LITerally on fire these days. I’m fresh from my second trip to Portland in less than a month, and all everyone was talking about was Cali, Cali, Cali!

For most of my life, California has been a destination location while places like Seattle or Portland routinely get slept on. After spending five full days adventuring across PDX, I was able to learn a ton about the city’s culture. Traveling with my usual partner in crime, Dominique Dabs, we visited new restaurants and food carts every single time we were hungry. If you asked what food impressed us the most, both of us would answer, Smaaken.

Any place selling waffles will catch my attention. Smaaken offered a variety of sweet and savory waffle options including sandwiches, desserts, as well as gluten-free and vegan options. This cart has about four or five different offerings that I plan on ordering whenever I visit next.

Portland’s Best Food Carts Ft. Smaaken

I love waffles and those who know me might say I’m the turkey king. Smaaken’s Monte Carlo waffle sandwich infused both, combining the best foods from breakfast and Thanksgiving into one of the best food cart meals I’ve ever had.

The waffle was cooked perfectly and the turkey still had a delicious flavor and wasn’t dried out. What made this turkey-waffle sandwich such a heavenly experience was the raspberry sauce and the light dusting of powdered sugar. Halfway through I was already wishing I had ordered one to go.

The craziest part about the sandwich hit me about three bites in. I couldn’t decide if this should be labeled as more of a desert, or as the best lunch food of all time. I wouldn’t waste time thinking about that for too long though. This waffle sandwich is so good someone might steal it from right in front of you.
