Indiescovery – Indie Hip-Hop For Your Ears #1

I like that weird shit. Crazy beats, genre-mixing, and lyrics that make me question my entire life’s purpose. Every week on my new series Indiescovery I’ll be bringing tracks and artists you may or may not already know. Feel free to hit me up with suggestions, or to tell me my taste in music is crap…as long as that also includes a suggestion.

1.”Make Me Fade” by K.Flay – Life As A Dog (2014)

I first heard K. Flay on a Myspace. Which gives you an idea how long this girl has been recording, touring, and writing her ass off to get to where she is now. I saw her at Warped Tour 2014 (yes, people still go to that) and I freaked out so much I told her my favorite song by the wrong name and she didn’t correct me. A+ music AND customer service.

I don’t think I’m excited enough here.

2. “Earthquake” by The Uncluded – Hokey Fright (2013)

NO I don’t think I’m the only one who has heard of Aesop Rock. I just needed another opportunity to plug this absolutely beautiful collaboration with Kimya Dawson. They named their union The Uncluded for the album Hokey Fright (2013). I love how both artists didn’t change their styles at all to adapt to the merge of genres; rather they did their own things and it worked the hell out.

3. “Get Down” by P.O.S. – We Don’t Even Live Here (2012)

I’m going to try my hardest to not just list the Rhymesayers roster every week, cause I love me some Rhymesayers. That’s a poem for another post. This P.O.S. track is the best anthem to getting shitty at the club. Or the house. The alleyway. Wherever. The beat aside, P.O.S. is able to fit this track between some more serious shit, as if at some point he was just like, “I’m tired of being sad let’s get fucked up.”

4. “Superhand’s Mantra (Fuck Us All)” by Busdriver – Beaus$Eros (2013)

Now Busdriver is a very interesting dude. He looks like a college professor obsessed with the 70s, and then he just opens up his mouth and vomits slam poetry all over your shocked face. That visual should prepare you plenty for this track off his 2013 album Beau$eros. It used to bug the shit out of me when artists rapped too fast, until it forced me to listen really hard so I could catch the lyrics. I highly recommend just concentrating on your music next time you plug in, there will be more epiphanies than you can handle.
