UFC Vegas 100 Main Event: Neil Magny vs. Carlos Prates
UFC Vegas 100’s main event packed a punch as unranked Brazilian knockout artist Carlos Prates (21-6-0) delivered a highlight reel performance against No. 15-ranked Neil Magny (29-14-0).
The welterweight top 15 rankings welcome a new star as ‘Fighting Nerd’s’ welterweight knockout artist Carlos Prates cashed in on a main event opportunity against Neil Magny.
The fight opened with the two men taking the center of the cage, where a feeling-out process took place. Magny looked to find his jab early on while mixing in clinch entries.
Prates looked to utilize his powerful low kicks while defending against Magny’s looming takedown threat.
The striker was well prepared for Magny’s grappling efforts as he successfully defended against the constant attempts from the UFC veteran while up against the cage.
Ultimately, Magny’s failed takedown attempts caused the grappler to slow down within the first round.
With Prates maintaining the low kicks, he began applying pressure on the tired and less mobile Magny. From here, it was only a matter of time until Prates landed a bludgeoning left hand on the temple of a ducking Magny.
This Prates left hand sent Magny crashing face first on the canvas as he was utterly unconscious.
Result: Prates via KO/TKO R1
UFC Vegas 100 Co-main Event: Gerald Meerschaert vs. Reinier De Ridder
UFC Vegas 100’s co-main event showcased a matchup between middleweight grapplers as Reinier De Ridder (18-2-0) successfully made his UFC debut against the well-tested veteran Gerald Meerschaert (37-18-0).
These talented middleweight grapplers engaged in an all-out war over three rounds as the UFC debuting De Ridder outworked Meerschaert until they found a late submission.
Many eyes within the mixed martial arts world were on De Ridder at UFC Vegas 100 as he finally arrived to make his UFC debut. The former ONE middleweight and light heavyweight champion weathered the storm of Meerschaert to fight his way to a gritty victory.
The fight opened with both men exchanging punches on the feet, with the two trying to get a feel for their standup game.
De Ridder did not take long to close the distance on Meerschaert against the cage as he began working for takedowns.
De Ridder was somewhat successful with these attempts; however, Meerschaert kept working his way off the mat.
On the feet, Meerschaert looked to be landing the cleaner and more effective strikes until the closing seconds of the opening round when De Ridder dropped Meerschaert with a left hook.
The second round was a back-and-forth scramble between the two as they fought for advantageous positions on the ground mixed in with ground and pound.
The third and final round was the deciding round. De Ridder wasted no time getting Meerschaert on the ground as he quickly assumed the top position and eventually secured an Arm Triangle choke.
Result: De Ridder via Submission (Arm Triangle Choke) R3
