80purppp began engulfed in music at a young age. He was born in London but soon moved to Ontario, Canada at the age of four. Later on, his family moved again to his current home, Edmonton, Alberta. Throughout his childhood, 80purppp learned how to play piano and continued on throughout high school. It wasn’t until the summer after 10th grade that he started working on his own music.
As a result of everything going on, he felt extremely overwhelmed and needed a way to release the positive and negative pent-up in his body. Therefore, he put all of that energy into his music.
Navigating Emotions, Feelings, and Relatability
In high school, 80purppp released his first album, titled Violet High. Overall, this project acted as an outlet to release all of his raw emotions. In addition, he said that in his music, you can hear a cry/desire for help. These emotions were often mixed with a sense of anger, confusion, and rebellion.
He wants people to resonate with the feeling, energy, and intensity of his words. Especially the flow and blend of the beat with his lyrics. Furthermore, he feels that writing is a huge form of self-care for him. Writing is his most powerful healing tool, and when his writing aligns with the music in the studio, he feels balanced.
Another form of self-care for 80purppp is consuming arts. He enjoys decompressing to films and new music, and would love to get more involved in acting.
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Music Scene
Upon growing up in Western Canada, 80purppp clung to Playboi Carti mixtapes and rappers that thrived in Los Angeles and Florida. Their skill, style, and flow inspired him to keep making music. He sought out American rappers around 2017 because he didn’t see many artists like him that he could look up to in his area.
However, 80purppp feels like there’s a lot in the music scene starting to brew up in his city. Over the years, his engineer Ahmed has been working with him on his music consistently. Also, 80purppp has worked with various producers over the years but keeps his writing and overall sonic sound production in-house.
