This last week in music was a blessing for hip-hop fans as J. Cole released his long-awaited album and 21 Savage/Slaughter Gang dropped a spine-tingling EP. The EP, Spiral, is also the official soundtrack for the new Book of Saw movie under the same title, the ninth installment in the SAW franchise.
21 Savage was brought in by filmmakers to executive produce the soundtrack. To be truthful, there isn’t any other artist in today’s rap game that is better suited for this role than the Atlanta native. His sinister raps personify the gruesome brutality of the franchise.
The opening track, which is also the theme song for Spiral: Saw, is a bass-boosted sample of the movies’ iconic theme music that has haunted viewers since it’s inception. 21 raps about his revenge fantasies and enmity between enemies in his usual deadpan way that enforces the ominosity of it all.
The EP ends with Savage tapping Young Thug and Gunna for an up-tempo banger that’s more for the turn up rather than cinema. Of course, we expected nothing but heat from these two. Throughout the rest of the EP however, 21 Savage lets his homies eat.
Young Nudy stepped up and hits a home run with “You Ain’t Heard” while Real Recognize Rio, 21 Lil Harold, and SG Tip channel their inner Savage and take on the mournful angst of “Down Bad.”
Although this is “just” a 4-track EP, Spiral leaves you wanting more and more. It’s as if you feel you were just getting warmed up and are ready for any horror that is thrown your way. Catch the flick now and feel the full intensity of 21 Savage and Slaughter Gang’s calamity.
