Steel City is not well known for the music artists it produces, but this must only be because no one knows who is from Pittsburgh. In fact, quite a few big names are from the small PA city, and you definitely have heard of most of them.
RMR is here to let you know that Pittsburgh is more than just Heinz Ketchup and Terrible Towels. Legends like Wiz Khalifa and Christina Aguilera come from the City of Bridges. Let’s dive into our list of 11 Artists You Didn’t Know Were From Pittsburgh.
Wiz Khalifa
Wiz Khalifa might just be the most popular and well-known artist from the city of Pittsburgh. He actually may be an artist that you could guess was from Pittsburgh given his song, ”Black and Yellow,” was written about his upbringing. Both black and yellow are colors that represent the city, and those from Pittsburgh have claimed the song as their anthem.
Mac Miller
Late rapper and record producer, Mac Miller, born Malcolm McCormick, is another fire artist that comes from Pittsburgh. He even has an album called Blue Slide Park, which is a nod to the popular Blue Slide Playground at Frick Park. In a couple of his songs, Miller shouted his city out.
Social House
Social House is a musical duo from Pittsburgh that blew up after their song “Magic in the Hamptons,” featuring Lil Yachty, was released. The pair went on to open for Ariana Grande’s Sweetener World Tour, and they released a collaboration with the princess of pop called, “Boyfriend,” during the tour. Grande actually dated Social House’s Mikey Foster.
Daya
Singer-songwriter, Daya, born Grace Martine Tandon, is from Mt. Lebanon, PA. Some of her popular songs include “Hideaway,” and “Sit Still, Look Pretty,” which were both released in 2016.
Montell Fish
Montell Fish is a multi-genre artist who has amassed 10.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify. His music is super unique and his songs are absolutely beautiful.
Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera is a name that everyone knows, but did you know she was from the small city of Pittsburgh? The “Genie in a Bottle,” singer grew up in Wexford. She even sang the National Anthem for the Pittsburgh Penguins multiple times.
Chevy Woods
Chevy Woods grew up in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh. You can read more about him in our article, “9 Upcoming Artists From Pittsburgh.” The rapper has worked with Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg, Juicy J, and has joined Taylor Gang.
Shanice
You may remember Shanice from the 1990s with her famous, Grammy-nominated song, “I Love Your Smile,” and for her musical work for the movie Pocahontas. She recently returned to her hometown for a mural dedication to local McKees Rocks and Hays Manor artists.
Benji
Benji is another artist featured in our “9 Upcoming Artists From Pittsburgh” article. He is definitely on the rise, and was even named one of NPR’s Music Artists to watch.
Dan Smyers
Dan Smyers, one half of the musical duo, Dan+Shay, grew up in Wexford, PA. He definitely has more of a country vibe going than the other artists on this list, but we just had to feature him on this list because of his effortless talent.
HARDO
Last but not least is musical artist and rapper, HARDO. Like Chevy Woods and Benji, you can read more about him in the “9 Upcoming Artists From Pittsburgh” article. He is the founder and CEO of label TRAP ILLUSTRATED ENT. HARDO and Mac Miller were also classmates, and the two would record songs in Miller’s basement back in the day (Mac Miller pun intended).
The small city of Pittsburgh knows how to produce big names. The Steelers and Penguins have nothing on Mac Miller, Benji, Shanice, or anyone on this list. Keep an eye out for future ‘burgh natives- they’re definitely somewhere out there on the way up (see https://www.respectmyregion.com/9-upcoming-pittsburgh-artists-you-need-to-add-to-your-playlists/)
