Sean Tyas delivered a phenomenal, diverse set through the many facets of trance last weekend at The Underground.
As the leader of the degenerates, he commanded our tribe of rebels into the early AM hours in our underground base. Most noteworthy of the night was the look of sheer bliss seen on everyone’s faces.
The American-born, Swiss DJ/Producer has made laps all around the globe for years. He has seen numerous crowds and factions of trance in this time, and regards Seattle as one of the best. But don’t just take our word for it, find out what he said to RMR in our brief interview with this legend!

Nic: After your set, you stated that it was one of the best shows you’ve had in a while. What makes it so?
Sean: All about the vibe! The energy I felt tonight was just fantastic, and I came off the decks with a huge smile on my face.
N: You’re starting 2018 off with a great track called “People”, could you tell us about the inspiration for the track?
S: After hearing the vocal in a popular show, “Some people see the ugliness in this world, the disarray… I choose to see the beauty”. I thought that was a perfect basis for track. Covering a beautiful breakdown surrounded by aggressively distorted acid-like sections full of power and drive.
N: What else should we be looking out for from you in the coming months?
S: My new single featuring Katherine Amy, “Twilo”, will be out worldwide soon. I’m really excited about this one because people have been patiently waiting a long time for me to do a track like this again. After that I have several remixes I have started, so those will follow “Twilo” when I finish them up.
N: I think it’s really awesome that you’re a rebel figure in the world of trance, taking on the establishment. What inspired you to become a degenerate? Was there a single moment that really kicked it off or was it built over time?
S: I don’t think one ever chooses to be a “degenerate” per se, its just how I am. I guess in that sense then, it just built over time? I don’t know. The main thing is to make sure people think for themselves and decide for themselves who they are.
N: It’s really fitting that you played here tonight, as The Underground is considered the rebel base of Seattle to many. This is your second show at The Underground, what does this club do that commercial clubs can’t?
S: The Underground has one hell of an awesome vibe. And now that I think about it, the main thing this place does that commercial clubs just can’t do is have clubbers that actually know the music they are listening to well. You can easily see that the people are intimately familiar with the sound, and are just as passionate about it as I am. Such a great feeling.
N: How does Seattle compare to the rest of the world in terms of our trance following?
S: Similar to what I said earlier, the Seattle crowd are diehards. I also see loads of Seattle faces at international events like ADE and Luminosity Beach, so that’s also really cool.
N: What corners of the globe have yet to be taken over by the leader of the degenerates?
S: Well, I’ve only been to New Zealand once, which is a pity considering I absolutely loved it there. I also have only been to South Africa once, so I would love to get back there more.
N: You’ve stressed before that your kind of rioting and push back against the establishment of dance music is not with violence or burning cars. How does someone properly resist mainstream EDM in your view?
S: If it sounds cheesy and obvious, it should be easy to resist. Though like I said earlier, it’s not really something one should have to put effort in to do. You’re either a person that wants to dig into his/her own musical tastes and explore what is truly resonating with them, or you’re the other type of person, the one that is totally fine hopping into a car and leaving the FM radio on.
The Underground still has one more unforgettable anniversary performance to go. On February 23rd, Christopher Lawrence will take the stage to conclude a month of amazing talent. Stay tuned for our preview of the show!
